How to get a cool domain for a new web site?

wwwdotcom.jpgDoing some research on name generators that are available on the net, I’ve found a number of web sites that helps you defining a perfect name for you new business.

Most of them are using the old method - step-by-step guide where you are asked a number of questions and answers should give you an idea on what kind of name you’re actually looking for. Other web sites are helping you with keyword research - all you have to do is enter a few keywords that you like and within the next few seconds the system will print out a number of keyword combinations, they also put some “addons” to a research results like “online”, “my”, etc.
Those helpful web sites can really be of great help, especially when you’re “low” with ideas.
Now that you got yourself a list of names, you’re ready to pick the best one and register it at your favorit domain registar.

After checking that name you picked from the list you’ve found out that it’s already registered! Never mind, check the next name from the list. Hmmm, that name is also registered, the next one also. Don’t worry, you’re not doing anything wrong, one thing you must know - all the cool names are already registered!! But, the help is on the way…

I’m sure you now that every domain name has it’s own lifecycle? In a few words - you’re obligated to pay for it’s usage on a yearly basis, and if you don’t pay - it gets available to others. Those names are known as - expired domain names.

Why are those expired names interesting to us? Because they are more valuable then the new ones !!
Here’s why:

  • they could be having an existing visitors traffic (also known as an expired traffic)
  • existing backlinks
  • they might have some Google PageRank and Alexa rankings
  • find some really cool names, or even new ideas for your future projects
  • you can introduce your web site to visitors as it was developed years ago
  • all the things I wrote here helps your web site with startup, you’re actually not starting from the ground zero and this gives you a much better starting point

Of course, you should be careful with picking the right expired domain name. You should check the domain’s history before buying one. There are number of things to check:

There are many things you should check, but the time you spend will definitely pay off if you find the right name !

OK, I got you into this “expired names world”, but there is still one question opened - where do I find expiring domain names?
That’s rather easy, just type “expired domains” in Google and you’ll get a bunch of web services…
