Biography
Here’s the short version with accent on tech realted topics…
Hello, my name is Darko Martić and I’m born in the summer of 1980. in a small place called Vukovar, located on the eastern part of Croatia - the Slavonia county.
Ever since I started doing “signals”, my parents noticed a remarkable knowledge for binary language and when I started with elementary school I got a computer. That was an awesome machine, a Commodore 64, very powerfull at the time. I was impressed with the ability to write some text on keyboard which made my computer act in a different way, those were my first programming experiences.
Besides playing with computer, as every other average child, in my childhood I had some other hobbies – fishing (on the river Danube on which resides my hometown), football and basketball, karate, etc.
But, then we got into the 90’s and “something” went wrong – Croatia was about to declare independence from Yugoslavia and before you know it we we’re in the middle of a civil war… This is not the time and place to go into details, but if interested here are some links on this topic: Vukowar.com, Yugoslav wars.
Due to this war situation, I end up in Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia, where I continued my education and also my activities with computers. My parents upgraded my machinery to Amiga 600 which is responsible to my first graphic design skills. Somewhere in about 1995. I got upgraded once more, this time to a PC world starting with 386, then 486, Pentium, etc…
Startup of this PC era is connected with my first real-business experience as an apprentice in a computer company in Zagreb – Systemcom, during my high school education (high school: Tehnička škola Ruđera Boškovića, Zagreb). Here I got into more details on hardware installations and some networking basics.
Somewhere at this point of time, as a hobbie I made a tryout on my 3D animation skills with software like 3D Studio Max and NewTek Lightwave 3D (I prefer Lightwave). Once I even got into a competition for a short 3D animation with honorable mention for concept and original interpretation of theme - take a look here.
At the end of 90’s, when I continued my education on a university (university: Tehničko veleučilište u Zagrebu), I got a deeper look on web technologies which I found the most interesting topic of them all and as the time goes by I got into it even deeper, and how the land lies I’ll stick to it tomorrow, and the day after…
I started with simple stuff, simple static HTML pages, then I got into Javascript, PHP and databases, SEO, etc, and I constantly try to keep up with the current technologies.
One of my first large web projects would be a custom webshop for the largest book and multimedia store in Croatia – Algoritam. I developed it using ASP+MSSQL technologies, and there is also a backend CMS application for their web editors. For full list of projects I worked on please open Professional Experience and Portfolio pages.
Next big milestone in my personal life happened at the beginig of 2006. when my wife-to-be and I bought a flat in Zagreb and then got married somewhere in the middle of that year. Year after that I got a daughter Marcela and about year and a half after that a son Nikola.
Our flat is near the Jarun lake where we often go for a walk. When I say “walk” that’s all sport you’ll ever hear from me :) We even have a room bicycle, but I mostly use it as a clothes hanger…
My wife, Nataša, is a graphic designer for printed materials but she is also familiar with basic web technologies, and her hobbie is to handle one of the most popular parenthood forum which we founded just before our first child – SuperBaby.org
Now I work as a document management consultant at one of the largest system integrator companies here in Croatia – King ICT. My work is based on EMC2 software platform for document management Documentum (enterprise level content storage) and input management platform Captiva InputAccel.
This is my “day” job, and when I come home from work I got into a completely different workplace – a professional dad, which is my most favorite task. I really enjoy playing with my kids, and when I see a smile on their face, there are no words that I could use to describe that feeling. After they go to sleep I transform myself once more and go back to my “professional hobbie” - investigating new web technologies, research for new SEO techniques, domain names, etc.
I’m also a gadget freak, and when I see a cool new mobile phone for example - it’s a must-have :)
I’m also writing articles for eBizMags.com which is a first croatian online magazine that specializes in e-business, and some other magazines like VIDI where I wrote a Document Management article (#165, December 2009.) in VIDI.biz addendum.
One of my startups is Digitalije.com where I’m writing about using modern technology on the non-geek level.
That’s all folks, for now.
I hope you won’t take personal my writing mistakes in my not-so-bad english :)
